Who is at the Top of John McCain's VP List?

Former Ohio Rep. Rob Portman: Top of the VP List?

Columnist Robert Novak says former Ohio Congressman Rob Portman has the "highest marks" for the Vice-Presidential slot inside John McCain's organization. Here's what he has to say:

While Sen. John McCain will not decide on a vice president for many months, Rob Portman gets the highest marks inside the Republican presidential candidate's organization.

Portman's background is legislative (House Republican leadership), executive (George W. Bush's Cabinet), diplomatic (U.S. trade representative) and economic (Office of Management and Budget director). He comes from a swing state (Ohio), is young enough (52) to contrast McCain and conservative enough (89 percent lifetime American Conservative Union rating).

A footnote: Key conservatives in his home state do not want Florida Gov. Charlie Crist on the ticket, but he is popular with voters in that crucial state. McCain likes Crist and owes him for his endorsement just before the Florida primary. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, a favorite for vice president among conservatives nationally, lost ground with McCain by not backing him in 2008 as he did in 2000.

Huckabee a better choice!

I have nothing against Portman, and I am sure he is a good man; however, Huckabee is a better choice for VP this year. Republicans need to shore up the conservative vote in the south, and Mike Huckabee can do that. Currently, many are stating they plan to sit out the election, and Republicans cannot win without them. Mike has an engaging personality and likeability that draws independents and conceivably cross-over Democrats. He has more executive experience and speaks genuinely to the common man. He is a candidate of change, and that is what the American people yearn for this election season. The hoards of grassroots supporters he has inspired will spring into action nationwide if he is chosen propelling needed youth and enthusasism into the Republican arena. If Huckabee is the VP, Republicans have a good shot at winning in November.

Mike Huckabee for VP

I don't agree with Portman for VP.
Mike Huckabee is a man that McCain trusts and respects. Gov. Huckabee can also bring a balance to McCain's leadership, bringing in the southern state votes, and support for social issues that many conservatives care about. The combination of strength these two together would bring to the Rep. ticket for November would be a sure win!

Huckabee for VP? You gotta be kidding cause it won't fly

As it stands currently it is a neck in neck run between McCain and Obama with approximately 8% undecided or uncommitted. I am one of the independents who will not vote for McCain if Huckabee is added to the ticket. I see Huckabee as the "glory boy" for the religious far right who are so ticked off because their boy didn't get the nomination that they will do anything to defeat McCain in November including placing Huckabee on the ticket. The religious far right needs to understand that they are no longer the "kingmakers"

The independents and swing voters which McCain is now beginning to pull from Obama and Hillary would turn once again to the Democrats in November if Huckabee is on the ticket.
Why the religious far right is so enamored with Huckabee I will never know for he is certainly not the "conservative" they claim him to be. The only thing I can see he has going for him with that wing of the party is that he has "Baptist Preacher" stuck on his name. Baptist preacher is not going to be the key in seeing that McCain wins the WH in November.
So forget Huckabee and concentrate on someone who has a bit more going for him than an endorsement from the far right wing of the party.

Of course Huckabee is the best choice for VP

He just proved that he can win the south even with no money to speak of.

He always showed respect to John McCain.

He also has the ability to win votes from Democrat voters in November.

That's just talking about his ability to help McCain win. You also have to consider the fact that he has PROVEN LEADERSHIP as an AUTHENTIC CONSERVATIVE! He's no Johnny-Come-Lately to conservative positions in politics (like Romney, for example); he's been LEADING in the direction of conservative politics. THAT'S the difference between Gov. Mike Huckabee and anybody else that's out there. No one else has the great experience (AND RESULTS) of LEADING as a conservative governor the way that he has.

McCain would be absolutely silly to not pick the man who either won or came in a close 2nd in every southern state.

Huckabee

Mike Huckabee is the hands down favorite because he has the ideas that will move this country forward, economically. It's imperative to get a handle on our finances. Everybody else is going down the same old path, expecting a different outcome. That's the definition of insanity, folks.

Huckabee? How about Hucka-not

According to what group Brian? The far right religious group backed by Tony Perkins, or the even more far right group backed by Don Wildmon and his American Taliban fanatics?
If you want to see Obama in the WH then put Huckabee on the ticket. He neglected the party in his own state to the point that they can't even find a Republican to run against a freshman Senator. When Huckabee was asked , he was not interested. Of course not he is posturing for VP because he knows it would put him one step closer to the WH in 2012 because he certainly knows that McCain would not be running again. The Republican party in Arkansas is nearly non-existent because of Huckabee's strive for power and his constant pandering for his run this year. A governors job is to strengthen his party within a state. Huckabee is a failure and you expect him to actually be a credible VP?

Huckabee needs to go back to Arkansas and find him some “little brown church in the vale” for he certainly has done enough damage to the GOP in his constant hanging on in a lost race and continual posturing for VP.

Anyone but Romney

Although I would be thrilled of Senator McCain chose Mike Huckabee for a running-mate, I am doubtful it will happen. That being said, I will continue to support Senator McCain as long as he picks almost anyone but Romney as a running-mate. I can't bring myself to vote for someone so incredibly fake and dishonest.
