Romney the VP Favorite?
Is Mitt Romney the odds on favorite to be Senator McCain's running mate?
Surprising many Republican insiders, Mitt Romney is at the top of the vice-presidential prospect list for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). But lack of personal chemistry could derail the pick…
Campaign insiders say McCain plans to name his running mate very shortly after Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) does, as part of what one campaign planner called a “bounce-mitigation strategy.”…
One of the chief reasons the Massachusetts governor is looking so attractive is his ability to raise huge amounts of money quickly through his former business partners and from fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons.
McCain sources tell Politico that they believe Romney could raise $50 million in 60 days. One close Romney adviser said it could even be $60 million…
But there’s one big problem: Despite the buddy-picture choreography of a McCain-Romney campaign swing, McCain remains far short of enamored of Romney.
What do you think?

I can't believe for a minute that McCain will choose Romney. First, there is a strong mistrust of Romney stemming from the campaign. His buy of negative ads knowing that McCain did not have the money to adequately respond made a big impression on the Senator. Second, this election is all about the working class voter, and Romney simply cannot relate with them. Remember, he was the one who scoffed about the declining economy during the primaries, remarking it was a good time to buy cheap stocks - Complete disconnect. Americans do not want more jobs shipped overseas and more corporations stripped for a joint venture capitalist. Our national security is now at stake, and we cannot afford to lose more of our manufacturing sector. Next, Romney has changed his positions on gay rights and abortion which will send social conservatives packing, and his second amendment credentials are weak. His judicial appointments were questionable in MA. Finally, Romney came in third and fourth in the south during the primaries, and the south is not safe this year. Obama has a definite "southern strategy" and Bob Barr and Ten Commandment Chuck will steal a few votes to make some southern states questionable to Republicans. No - Romney would be a fatal anchor around McCain's neck if he were chosen.
And in the year of Reverend Wright, Romney is vulnverable
Really. Someone at the campaign headquarters needs to do some serious internet research on the beginnings of Romney's church and the statements by his leaders in the latter half of this century. The FLDS didn't make up this stuff on their own--they have a common heritage. Nothing is sacred in this election. When a retired USA general can say what he did ths weekend about McCain's time as a POW and the incredible disrespect for all fighter/combat pilots and all of the Democrat Party stands and cheers this garbage and demeans Bud Davis, Romney's religion will be child's play for the bloggers and surrogates.
McCain's best possible choices wouldn't make the far right happy (but then I'm beginning to think the far right and the far left have one thing in common: they're in a la la land where reality begins and ends with absolutism. A different plain altogether from the humble reality the rest of us occupy.
I just don't see how Romney helps him win
Romney may be conservative, but I don't really believe he represents "the base". Despite helping in Michigan (which is needed), who in the party does Romney really excite? McCain needs someone to get people excited about his campaign. How about someone totally off the list like Steve Largent? He's a solid Republican, there really wouldn't be any dirt on him, he spent several years in Congress and almost made it to Governer, and he's one of the best Wide Receivers of all time.
In my opinion, McCain needs someone with star power.
