John McCain Willing to Reconsider Drilling In ANWR

According to the News-Leader John McCain says that he is willing to reconsider drilling in ANWR.

For years, McCain has opposed drilling for oil in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

But McCain said he'd be willing to reconsider that stance as well.

"I would be more than happy to examine it again," McCain said.

It seems to me that the "Band Wagon" has begun to roll. Many Republicans that had previously apposed drilling off of our coasts and other various locations within the U.S. are starting to hear the music.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist is one of the latest to change his positon on offshore drilling.

Newt Gingrich is leading the way having obtained more than one Million signatures in a petition he calls Drill here.Drill now.Pay less.

I think Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska still supports drilling in ANWAR.

I have 'personally' opposed it in the past (for years)...thinking about that 'rainy day' that I knew would be looming ahead. John McCain, less in the pocket of big oil, has probably been faithfully thinking about that 'rainy day' ahead also.

Is it raining anyone?

Walls crumblin'?

Ground shaking?

Waters rising?

Well, we'll see what happens in November.

Meanwhile, let's let John and I 'think' about it until after November.

One thing that makes me upset about drilling in ANWAR

For years Alaska crude has been shipped wholesale and unprocessed to refineries in California, depriving Alaskans of employment opportunities. Alaska has also been unable to market its oil on the international market...depriving the State over the years in billions of extra revenues.

This has been tantamount to an economic embargo on Alaska all of these years.

Meanwhile, environmentalists...and many of them from California, have delayed exploration and development of existing and known reserves of oil in Alaska and off the shores of California while the Nation as a whole suffers.

In Alaska, many of those same environmentalists were/are employed by the State of Alaska while thriving off the oil being pumped out of Prudhoe Bay yet working against expansion of the industry.

They were also responsible for giving other industries, like logging in S.E. Alaska a hard time...destroying more jobs for Alaskans.

Today, Californians don't want to allow drilling and exploration off their coasts...largely for 'environmental' reasons.

Meanwhile, the State of California has legalized gay marriage...further defying what is best for the rest of the Nation.

The State of California, along with the State of Massachusetts, Nevada and the whole of the Democratic Party is bringing the judgment of God down on the country.

My belief is that 'things have got to change' before we 'think' of drilling in ANWAR.

The sky IS falling.

The rain IS pouring.

The floods ARE coming.

The walls ARE crumbling.

Fires ARE burning.

The earth IS trembling.

Children ARE crying.

Babies ARE dying.

And California says NO to abortion reform and now has allowed gays to defile the sanctity of marriage between man and woman as the State of Massachusetts has done.

How do you think the good Lord above will react to all this?

Are those who support the State of California, Massachusetts, Nevada and the Democratic Party expecting a blessing?

Nay, I say. 'The curse is coming'.

It's time for the Nation to abandon the agenda of the Democrats and join John McCain for the salvation of America!

Drilling VS Environment

I completely agree with McCain's position on this. We need to get off our dependence off foregn oil. There are vast oil reserves within our own country that we are not utilizing. Also, developing more nuclear power and green tech will reduce greenhouse gas emissions while at the same time lessen our need for oil from the mid-east.

I agree that certain areas should be off limits to drilling, such as ANWAR. It is an untouched area and an oil spill or other accident there could ruin the delicate eco system. It is all about BALANCING our energy needs with protecting the environment. It is not as black and white as the environmentalists or the oil companies would like you to believe. Another issue is that we have not increased our refining capacity.

Look at Norway. They drill off their coast for oil and have an excellent environmental record. France's power is 80% nuclear. And these are " liberal" countries. What is wrong with us?

Giving the states the right to decide if they want to drill is a good idea. The problem though is that the people should get to decide, not the judges (ex. CA gay marriage). Legislating from the bench is not the job of the judiciary. I read that 68% of Americans support more domestic oil production.

Getting Ready to Drill in the Arctic - Some Just Talk, Some Do

Shell Oil Co. one step closer to drilling in Arctic

EPA permit does not put cap on carbon dioxide emissions

By Jeannette J. Lee | the associated press

ANCHORAGE - A permit issued by the Environmental Protection Agency puts Shell Oil Co. one step closer to drilling in the Arctic this year, agency officials said Thursday.

The decision came a day after President Bush urged Congress to lift its long-standing ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, arguing that the U.S. needs to increase its energy production.

Shell's exploratory drilling project will meet all "health-based ambient air quality standards," said Rick Albright, director of EPA's Air, Waste and Toxics office in Seattle.

The EPA permit allows Shell Offshore Inc., a subsidiary of Dutch-owned Shell, to release up to 245 tons of nitrogen oxides at each of its drilling sites in the Beaufort Sea.

That's roughly equivalent to the amount produced by 1,500 school buses each year, EPA officials said.

Shell spokesman Curtis Smith said the permit is one of more than a dozen needed to drill in the Beaufort.

"We're pleased the EPA issued the permit for the 2008 drilling program," Smith said. "We remain committed to operating in a safe and environmentally responsible manner."

Although the permit puts a cap on nitrogen oxides, it does nothing to limit the output of carbon dioxide, a gas that has caused temperatures to rise worldwide. The warming has triggered a dramatic melting of Arctic sea ice.

Carbon dioxide is not regulated under the EPA's ambient air quality standards, said Nancy Helm, air permits program manager in EPA Region 10, which includes Alaska.

Shell's current exploration plan is still blocked by an injunction from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, pending a final ruling on whether the company can drill at all.

"We're hopeful that the 9th Circuit will overturn the exploration plan and render this permit meaningless," said Brendan Cummings, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity.

The air-quality permit can be challenged through the EPA appeals process, as well as in court.
