John McCain in Selma

This is an historic moment. And the news media barely noticed.

I agree

They are too busy watching the Hillary/Obama slug fest.

Some noticed

And while it wasn't a wild moment for the press, I think we sometimes underestimate the power of quiet gestures and word of mouth. One of the most amazing things happened this morning as my household was getting ready to leave for work. My 23 year old son, recent college graduate who learned everything he thinks he believes about American politics and Republicans from left-wing professors asked me how Obama could have lost yesterday. He admitted he hadn't been following it as closely as I. I explained about the San Francisco remarks and Reverend Wright, and he said, and I quote, "Well, McCain is a shoe in. He's really a funny guy. I like him." So where did he get his political insight? Late night television, folks. And he is NOT a fan of Bush and is obviously not connecting McCain to Bush. He sees him as a completely separate candidate. That's good news.

Speaking of which, the Democrat plan to hang Bush around McCain's neck is easily countered: I mean you can't have it both ways (1) McCain is in trouble with the Right because he didn't march to Party lines and (2) it's just a 3rd term for Bush. And every time a Democrat or liberal pundit says this, they need to be called on their double-think.

Also, there needs to be a counter one-liner: Obama is a Carter second term. McCain researchers need to go back and collect Carter quotes about defeating the Washington establishment (which just means he didn't know how to get ANYTHING done or even how a bill becomes a law) and how foreign affairs need negotiation and human rights. And apparently the American public forgot (or in the case of our youngsters, never learned) that it was Jimmy Carter--ambassador to Hamas--who literally handed Iran over to Islamic extremists and who invited USSR adventurism from Africa to Asia to South America and so reduced the US response to their invasion of Afganistan to a declaration that we wouldn't throw a javlin. Someone needs to find Carter's famous "malaise" speech. Like the current left, he delighted in blaming all our troubles on US.

And so, yes. Vote for Obama and give Jimmy Carter a second term.
