Obama on Issues

Peter Kirsanow at The Corner has does an outstanding job of setting forth clear evidence that Barack Obama is the living definition of a "radical." Just read through the list compiled by Kirsanow to support the fact that Barack Obama is truly THE most liberal, radical politician to ever seek the Presidency. Most of this we already knew, but somehow seeing it compiled together so succinctly drives the point home:

Last night on one of the talking head shows Dick Morris casually stated that Obama is not a radical. Perhaps not. But consider that according to recent polling, Obama's positions on the following issues are opposed by a median of 76% of respondents:

* Obama supports giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants
* Obama supports racial preferences in public employment, contracting and school admissions
* Obama opposes a ban on partial birth abortions
* Obama would cut funding for research and development of "unproven" missile defense systems
* Obama opposes making English the official language for doing business with the U.S. government
* Obama opposes the Supreme Court decisions prohibiting racial assignments of grade school children
* Obama opposes parental notification for minors obtaining abortions

Moreover, Obama

* would talk without precondition with the leaders of state sponsors of terror
* is the only U.S. senator to vote against the language of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act
* supports giving foreign terrorists habeas rights
* contends William Ayers is a mainstream member of the community
* for twenty years belonged to a church whose pastor, Obama's mentor, was prone to making, well, somewhat radical statements
* plans to raise payroll, income, capital gains and estate taxes
* despite recent rhetoric, never opposed a gun ban
* has received the following ratings:

NARAL — 100%
NEA — A
ACORN — 100%
Planned Parenthood — 100%
National Taxpayers Union — F
Family Research Council — 0%
Citizens Against Government Waste — 13%
NRA — F

Obama may not be a radical, but the National Journal's assessment that he's the most liberal member of the U.S. senate is well-deserved. Nonetheless, I'd like to know how Morris defines "radical."

Comparing McCain & Obama on the Issues

ISSUE

MCCAIN

OBAMA

Foreign Policy

John McCain would strengthen our alliances, keep America safe, and enhance American prosperity by expanding trade.

Obama says he would meet unconditionally with the world’s worst dictators, from Ahmadinejad to Castro to Kim Jong Il.

Iraq

John McCain had the courage to call for a change in strategy that is now succeeding.

Obama says he will retreat from Iraq no matter what the situation on the ground is, and no matter what advice he receives from military commanders.

Trade

John McCain will lower barriers to trade. Ninety-five percent of the world's customers are outside of our borders and we need to be at the table when the rules for access to those markets are written.

Caving to isolationist sentiment, Obama would reverse our path to lowering trade barriers to U.S. products. Obama opposes free trade agreements with Colombia and Korea, and would unilaterally renegotiate NAFTA.

Spending

John McCain is committed to and has long fought for restoring fiscal discipline by eliminating wasteful government spending.

Obama proposes to increase federal spending, further increasing the burden that we will pass along to our children and grandchildren.

Energy Security

John McCain will break from the past to lead a great national campaign to put us on a course for energy independence.

Obama voted for the same policies that created the problem.

National Security

John McCain understands the threat posed to America by violent Islamic extremists and has the judgment and experience necessary to lead our country to success in this struggle.

Obama has consistently shown poor judgment about the nature of the terrorist threat and the policies needed to keep America safe.

Taxes

John McCain is committed to keeping taxes low, as well as making the tax code fairer and flatter.

Obama proposes to raise taxes on millions of Americans and small businesses.

Judiciary

John McCain will look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law and a proven commitment to judicial restraint.

Obama would nominate judges that would continue the judicial activism that has characterized the federal bench for years. This is why he opposed Roberts and Alito.

Health Care

John McCain will make health care more available, affordable and responsive to patients.

Senator Obama thinks we can improve health care by driving Americans into a new system of government orders, regulations and mandates.

Reforming Washington

Only John McCain has a record of working to end Washington's stagnant, unproductive partisanship.

The American people have not seen Obama forsake partisanship for progress.

A Change Election

John McCain will initiate far-reaching reforms in almost every area of government policy recognizing that many of government's policies and institutions have failed.

Obama is looking to the past for solutions that have failed us before and will fail us again. In his short-time in office, Obama has accumulated the most liberal voting record in the Senate.

Barack Obama is long on rhetoric and short on details when it comes to issues. It will be necessary for John McCain to fill in some of the blanks about Obama should he become the Democratic Nominee.

One example is Obama's clear anti-2nd Amendment record. Obama is about as liberal as it gets on many issues, but certainly when it comes to gun rights. Obama, while an Illinois State Senator, even voted against a bill that prevented a homeowner from being sued by a criminal for shooting the intruder in his own home! Obama actually thought the homeowner should be able to be charged, when actually the homeowner was the victim! Here is a transcript of Jim Geraghty explaining this on the Glenn Beck Show a while back:

No, I think you hit the nail on the head is that if you listen to a Barack Obama speech, if you are a conservative like I am, there's not a heck of a lot that you disagree with when he talks about telling people, you know, to have the audacity of hope and dreaming and optimism and, you know, our best days are ahead of us. Look, that's all great stuff. It's only when you look down into his record and you look at the policy he's recommending and you realize -- I think my favorite one was that in this Illinois state legislature he preserved the right of burglars to sue someone who shoots them as they break into a person's house. It's a law regarding the Castle doctrine and firearms ownership and Barack Obama felt it was very important if you break into someone's house and they shoot you that you have a right to sue them. This guy, not as moderate as his rhetoric.

Somehow, I think this gem has the makings of quite an effective "contrast" campaign ad this Fall!
