The other day, when John McCain spoke at Rice University in Houston, Texas, he did so at the Baker Institute, named in honor of former Secretary of State James A. Baker, III. After McCain's Town Hall Meeting there, Baker took the opportunity to formally endorse John McCain for President:

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced that former Secretary of State James Baker has endorsed John McCain for president.

Secretary Baker released the following statement on his endorsement:

"I am proud today to endorse John McCain for President of the United States. Senator McCain is a great American leader, a true hero, a thoughtful and a dedicated Republican, and a person whom I greatly admire.

"I support John McCain because he has the critical leadership qualities, real-world experience, and resolute moral compass that our next president will need in order to responsibly address the daunting global and domestic challenges that lie ahead.

"John McCain offers the 'roll-up-your-sleeves, bottom-line approach' that Americans, and especially Texans, demand of their leaders.

"Texans also cotton to concise country sayings that make a strong point. So while we are here in my home state, let me add that John McCain has a lot more than just the hat ... he has the cattle to go with it.

"In short, ladies and gentlemen, John McCain has the vision, experience and know-how to provide strong leadership and guidance for our great nation. I wholeheartedly endorse his candidacy to become the 44th President of the United States."

John McCain released the following statement on Secretary Baker's endorsement:

"Secretary Baker has a distinguished record of service to our country and our party. I look forward to his counsel and am honored to have his support."

John McCain held a Town Hall Meeting today on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas. Here is a summary from the Associated Press of the event:

"Of course, that comment of mine was distorted. Life isn't fair, as Jack Kennedy said," McCain told a town hall meeting at Rice University. "I was talking about American presence after the war."

Responding to a student who had criticized his 100-year remark, McCain added, "No American argues against our military presence in Korea or Japan or Germany or Kuwait or other places, or Turkey, because America is not receiving casualties."

"I think, generally speaking, we have a more secure world thanks to American presence, particularly in Asia, by the way, as we see the rising influence of China," McCain said. "But the key to it is American casualties, America's most precious asset, and that is American blood."  read more »

John McCain held a Town Hall Meeting today in San Antonio, Texas, with employees at USAA. Here is the video of the meeting, courtesy of WOAI-TV, followed by the writeup on the visit:

U.S. Senator John McCain held a town hall meeting with employees at USAA Wednesday afternoon.

Senator McCain received a warm welcome from USAA employees, who were packed nearly to the ceiling to see the man likely to be the Republican choice for president.

McCain talked for about an hour, hitting on all of the major issues, including the economy, immigration and Iraq. The senator wasted little time outlining differences between him and his democratic opponents. He told the crowd his plans to reduce health care costs, improve veterans benefits and his views on the Iraq war.

Senator McCain then took questions ranging from gun control to immigration, saying the U.S. needs to secure it's borders with both physical and technological barriers.

The question he didn't answer was about his choice for vice president.
