John McCain raised $5.5 million during a fundraising swing through Florida earlier this week, according to two sources familiar with the haul.

While much of the media attention the Republican got from his visit to the Sunshine State was devoted to his health care events, McCain squeezed in six fundraisers in between his policy events. He held big-ticket events in both Tampa-St. Pete and South Florida.

Now that he's raising cash more for the party than himself, McCain can charge more at the door and require co-hosts to up their bundle. Individual donors can now give up to $70,000 by splitting their contributions four ways: between McCain's campaign, his FEC compliance fund, the RNC Victory fund and a group of four battleground states that have established federal entities to help underwrite the party effort.
