Condi Rice
Rich Lowry at National Review Online is reporting that the McCain Campaign has been calling around the nation to state GOP officials to sound them out on what will happen if Sen. McCain chooses a pro-choice VP running mate. This would seem to indicate that Tom Ridge and Joe Lieberman are still in the running to be the pick, and even Condoleeza Rice , who describes herself as being "mildly pro-choice":
NR has learned that the McCain campaign has been calling key state GOP officials around the country the last couple of days and sounding them out about the consequences of a pro-choice VP pick. The campaign is asking about the reaction of conservative grass-roots activists to such a pick and whether a pro-choicer can be sold to them. This is an indication that the McCain campaign is serious about the possibility of a pro-choice VP nominee and that McCain leaving the door open to Tom Ridge last week may not have been merely a friendly nod to a longtime supporter. In this scenario, McCain's emphatic pro-life statements Saturday night and his pledge that he'll run a "pro-life administration" would have been partly an attempt to reassure conservatives in the event of a pro-choice pick. Here is NR's take today on why going with a pro-choicer would be a mistake for McCain.

Some have speculated that John McCain might pick Secretary of State Condoleezza rice as his running mate for the 2008 Presidential election.
Since many are checking on schedules of potential running mates to try and get a possible scoop, I thought it would be fun to submit one of my own.
Secretary Rice's current schedule has her returning to Washington DC early this week.
It just so happens that John McCain will be back in Washington DC for a "fundraiser" on July 31rst. Potentially both Rice and McCain could be in the same place on the same day during the week that most rumors say he will announce his running mate. HMMMMM?
Kinda makes ya think doesn't it? ;)

Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice appeared on Fox & Friends this morning, and said she is not interested in becoming Vice-President, although she is flattered to be considered. Rice said her "time is up," and that it is time for her to go back to Stanford.

Over at the USA Today blog, DeWayne Wickham speculates on the possibility of Senator McCain choosing Condoleezza Rice as his running mate.
For months now there has been a grassroots effort, called "Think Condi 08," to build a groundswell of support for making Rice the Republican vice presidential candidate. But so far it hasn't taken hold — and there's no evidence that Rice even wants the nomination.
McCain should try mightily to change this. The excitement Democrats have shown for Obama and Clinton has produced record turnouts in many of the party's primaries and caucuses. Republicans have generated no similar level of enthusiasm.
By picking Rice for the second slot, McCain would make this a historic election for Republicans, too. He'd also link the GOP to a surprisingly long line of blacks who have been a political party's choice to be president or vice president.
Condi Rice does have an impressive resume. Though, from all reports I've heard she has shown no interest in holding a higher office. Naturally the speculation on who Senator McCain chooses will continue...
