Bobby Jindal

Gov. Bobby Jindal said today on Fox News that he is not interested in being considered as a VP choice for John McCain:

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Wednesday he does not want to be considered as vice president on the GOP ticket, making him among a growing number of those pulling themselves out of the race.

” I look forward to continuing to be governor of Louisiana. This is a once in a lifetime chance to improve our state. We’ve cut six taxes but we’ve got a lot more work to do right here in Louisiana,” Jindal told “FOX & Friends” on Wednesday.

Jindal said he did not have any inside information to disclose about speculation that John McCain could make a decision this week on his pick for the No. 2 spot.

“I’ve never talked to the senator about the vice presidency or his thoughts on selecting the vice president. I would certainly be surprised if they made a decision this week, but that’s entirely up to the senator and his campaign. They’ll make that decision I think when they’re ready,” he said.

Jindal said the ability to possibly serve as president is the most important quality for a vice presidential candidate.

“I think the most important thing in picking a vice president is not what state they come from, not what demographic they appeal to, but rather whether the senator thinks this person would be ready to be president if — God forbid — that situation arises. That’s probably the only thing that should matter,” he said.

Jindal has been the focus of wide speculation that he may be McCain's pick, especially since McCain will reportedly meet with Jindal today in New Orleans.

The website My Man Mitt says that Mitt Romney will be John McCain's choice to be his Vice-Presidential running mate:

Update (12:30): Marc Ambinder says, look for no announcement this week. Mitt's out of town.

Update (11:30AM): Two sources say: "Mitt is it!" One source: "This is a head fake."

You heard it here first.

(we think).

Well, it very well could be. John McCain will meet with Jindal tomorrow in New Orleans, however. It is getting very interesting!

Chris Cillizza is reporting tonight that John McCain will change his planned schedule to travel to New Orleans on Wednesday to meet with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. This would seem to indicate Jindal is being seriously considered for VP, unless it is an elaborate way of fueling speculation to take some of the limelight away from BO:

John McCain will huddle with vice presidential aspirant Bobby Jindal during a trip to New Orleans later this week, sources close to the campaign confirm to The Fix.
VP Watch

McCain's trip to Louisiana on Wednesday was the cause of much head scratching in the political world as it was not in keeping with a week of planned stops in battleground states.

But, the meeting with Jindal, who has been the state's governor since 2007, suggests that McCain himself is deeply engaged in the process of picking his second-in-command and that the youthful Jindal is under serious consideration.

(Worth noting: Conservative columnist Bob Novak is reporting -- and Matt Drudge is touting -- that McCain will make his vice presidential pick known by the end of this week.)

Jindal, at 37, is widely regarded within the Republican party nationally as one of its rising stars and has been touted as the best choice for vice president by a variety of party luminaries ranging from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) to talk radio celebrity Rush Limbaugh.

In a recent profile of Limbaugh, New York Times magazine reporter Zev Chafets wrote: "As for politics, Rush has already picked his candidate for the Conservative Restoration: Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, a 37-year-old prodigy whom Limbaugh considers to be a genuine movement conservative in the Ronald Reagan mold -- 'fresh, energetic and optimistic in his view of America.'" Gingrich has called Jindal "America's most transformational governor."

Here is a report on the Memorial Day Weekend "Barbeque" John McCain is holding with 10 couples at his Arizona ranch, including several VP Possibilities. The report says Charlie Crist, Bobby Jindal, and Mitt Romney will attend. Mike Huckabee was invited but declined because of a trip to Alaska. It will be interesting to see what comes out about this gathering in the days ahead.

Here is part of a very interesting article by William Kristol that appears in the New York Times today. In it, Kristol reveals that no less than four McCain staffers in the last week mentioned Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana as a possible McCain Vice-Presidential running mate. Kristol is often spot on in what he is hearing and sensing, as when he correctly predicted Mitt Romney would end his presidential bid and endorse John McCain on Thursday, March 6, after the Tuesday, March 4, Super Tuesday primaries.

I fundamentally disagree with why they seem to think Jindal may need to be the choice, but I do believe he would be an excellent pick. Both Kristol and the McCain staffers appear to fear that Obama will be such a strong nominee that McCain must pick someone "outside the box" to be able to compete with him. I do not think Obama will be strong, but I do think Jindal would be an exciting choice:

Still, Obama is the likely Democratic nominee. Some conservatives are giddy at the thought — kidding themselves that the general election will therefore be easy, that Obama will be another Dukakis. I was struck, though, in several conversations this week with McCain campaign staffers and advisers that they’re pretty sober about the task ahead. About the Dukakis analogy, for example, one McCain aide said: If in 1988 Ronald Reagan had had a 30 percent job approval rating, and 80 percent of the voters had thought we were on the wrong track, Dukakis would have won.

And the McCain campaign knows the environment for Republicans remains toxic. They noticed that on Saturday night Republicans lost their second House seat in a special election in two months — this one in a district they had held since 1974 and that Bush had carried by almost 20 points in 2004.

Another McCain staffer called my attention to this finding in the latest Fox News poll: McCain led Obama in the straight match-up, 46 to 43.  read more »

Last night on "The Tonight Show," Governor Bobby Jindal made an appearance. In the clip above, he talks to Jay Leno about turning around Louisiana and the possibility of being McCain's running mate.

Hat Tip: Real Clear Politics

Here is raw video footage of Sen. John McCain touring New Orleans on April 24, 2008, to see the remnant storm damage from Hurricane Katrina. He was joined on the tour by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. McCain's stop in New Orleans was Day 4 of his "It's Time for Action Tour."

Here is a local news report that discusses Sen. John McCain's plans to tour New Orleans' 9th Ward today, April 24, 2008, escorted by Gov. Bobby Jindal. The report also discusses the possibility of Jindal becoming McCain's VP running mate.

Senator McCain will be heading to Louisiana tomorrow.

Arizona Senator John McCain plans his first visit to New Orleans this week since locking up the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

McCain will to tour the Lower 9th Ward with Governor Bobby Jindal tomorrow morning, and follow that with a "town hall" event at Xavier University, where he will take questions from the public.

A campaign spokesman says McCain is expected to outline his vision for the region's continued recovery from the 2005 hurricanes.

After spending the morning in New Orleans, McCain will travel to Baton Rouge, where former Governor Buddy Roemer is scheduled to host a fund-raiser on his behalf.

Here is an interview with Sen. John McCain done last night, March 6, 2008, by Atlanta station WXIA-TV. Just click on the picture above to go to the interview. McCain is asked about his coming Vice-Presidential Choice and other issues such as tax cuts and containing pork barrel spending. Interestingly, McCain himself mentions the names of Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and J.C. Watts of Oklahoma in the discussion of Vice-Presidential possibilities. That's the first I have heard him do that.
