McCain Envisions How First Term Will Go
By Glen Johnson, AP
May 15, 2008Article Excerpt
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - John McCain, looking through a crystal ball to 2013 and the end of a prospective first term, sees "spasmodic" but reduced violence in Iraq and Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden dead or captured and government spending curbed by his ready veto pen.
The Republican presidential contender also envisions April's annual angst replaced by a simpler flat tax, illegal immigrants living humanely under a temporary worker program, and political partisanship stemmed by weekly news conferences and British-style question periods with joint meetings of Congress.
In a speech being delivered Thursday, McCain concedes he cannot make the changes alone, but he wants to outline a specific governing style to show the accomplishments it can achieve.
"I'm not interested in partisanship that serves no other purpose than to gain a temporary advantage over our opponents. This mindless, paralyzing rancor must come to an end. We belong to different parties, not different countries," McCain says in remarks prepared for delivery in the capital city of Ohio, a general election battleground. "There is a time to campaign, and a time to govern. If I'm elected president, the era of the permanent campaign will end; the era of problem solving will begin." read more »

Ed Morrissey has a great opinion and anaysis piece posted at Hotair.com in regard to a new article by Matt Bai in the New York times call The McCain Doctrines.
I had read the entire 8 page report by Bai and was gathering some notes and reasearch before I clicked on Hotair and started reading Morrissey's post. It appears that great minds think alike! :) Ed focused on the same nuggets that I had been trying to use to form a proper sentence in rebuttal to Bai's assertions.
The article is long but worth reading just to be informed about what the inevitable fallout may be. I am particularly suspicious of the terms "Occupation" (Occupiers) and "Iraqization". I think the Left may have moved from attacking McCain's age and turned the page backwards to their tired mantra of opposing the War in Iraq. That would fit perfectly with the emminent selection of Barack Obama as the Democrat nominee. I believe you will be hearing those "buzz words" a lot this week.

NRA chief stresses common ground with McCain
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre says Republican John McCain isn't in lockstep with the group on every issue, but the nation's gun owners aren't "foolish enough" to ignore their common ground.
LaPierre sized up the presidential candidates in an interview Tuesday, a few days before the NRA opens its convention in Louisville. McCain is scheduled to speak to the group Friday.
McCain has voted against a ban on assault-type weapons, but he favors requiring background checks at gun shows. McCain also voted to shield gun-makers and dealers from civil suits.
LaPierre was critical of Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying both are pandering to gun owners by "mouthing pro-Second Amendment words."

Rick Santorum wrote a a piece back in April called "The Elephant in the Room: Why conservatives should support McCain"
I read it back in April and remembered it today when I was following the news of John McCain's "Climate Change Plan""
What struck me most of all and reminded me of Santorum's story was his reference to Ronald Reagan's axiom that someone you agree with on 80 percent of the issues is your friend, not your enemy.
I have heard that reference used for a variety of opinions and somehow it seemed to fit them all because it is true.
I do not agree with John McCain on climate change and I do not agree with him on his oposition to drilling in ANWR.
McCain did leave an opening in the debate over how to handle the decision of drilling off the coast of Florida by saying that he was a Federalist and that the decision was something for the States themselves to decide.
Santorum's story is worth a read.
Excerpt:
"I've disagreed with him on immigration, global warming and federal protection of marriage. I've taken strong exception to his view that the federal government should fund embryonic stem-cell research. But disagreement on such issues is one of the reasons we have presidential primaries - so each party's voters can sort out the issues and personalities and choose the candidate who best reflects their collective view. Republicans have done that. Now the question for conservatives is whether McCain fits the Reagan Axiom that someone you agree with on 80 percent of the issues is your friend, not your enemy.
Of all the issues confronting the United States today, none is more important than our nation's security. Although these issues don't dominate our news as they once did, we cannot forget that without a safe and secure country, all other issues don't matter."

For me, I'll continue to support the three legged elephant over the alternative. The "Donkey" just has too many fleas. :)

John McCain will be interviewed by Bill O'Reilly on Fox. This follows OReilly's interview of Hillary Clinton last week.
The show airs at 8:00PM EST on the Fox News Channel.
O'Reilly has the highest rated show on cable news. This will give McCain some needed exposure and will help him convey his message to the American people and certainly help to counter some of the "over exposure" that the Democrat nominees are currently receiving.
